Canoe Trip Journal
June 7-11 2000
by Matt Fallowfield
My first canoe trip with CASS Canoe Club and Darren’s last. (Hopefully not) Yes, it's my last... unless I get invited back to lead a trip...(fingers crossed)
June 7
- Left CASS in Woodstock at 1:55 pm.
- Highway 401, 407, 400/69
- Stopped in Parry Sound for gas and Wendy’s for supper!
- I spent half the money that I had on one meal!
- At Wendy’s we talked about Mr. Brown’s famous sayings for a trip.
- Continued to George Lake
- Arrived at George Lake at about 8:00 pm.
- Set up camp on 3 nice "car camping" sites
- Had a camp fire
- Bed at about 2 am.
June 8 (Sarah's Birthday!)
- Up at 7 am. - Phil was up first then me then Darren and before 8:00 am, everyone was up.
- Breakfast was oatmeal and bagels with Peanut Butter and Jam. Everyone served themselves
- Canoes loaded and on the water for about 10:00am.
- Paddled through George lake to a carryover (80m) into Freeland lake.
- Paddled Freeland lake to a 455m portage
- Completed 455m portage in excellent time considering it was our first portage of the trip and we were into Killarney lake!
- Sailed 3/4 of Killarney lake by rafting (new experience for some)
- Camped on site # 14 on and island.
- Landed at about 12 noon
- Setup camp and went swimming for literally 2 seconds! IT WAS COLD!
- Lunch was subs (Phil and I made it)
- Supper was Pita Pizzas by Darren and I! Dessert was an interesting lemon no-bake dessert (complete with birthday candles for Sarah of course!)
- I went to bed early around 10 pm and everyone else was later than that!
June 9
- We got up to Phil preparing breakfast with a few other people.
- Breakfast was sausage and oatmeal (because we forgot the eggs)
- Tents and everything packed and ready to go by 10:00 am.
- Paddled back down Killarney with the wind calm and at our backs!
- Over a beaver dam and on to a 130m portage into O.S.A. lake.
- Once in O.S.A. lake we paddled to our massive island campsite # 28
- Tents and a full camp set up in 15 min.
- Lunch was stuffed pitas made by Darren and Matt
- Sat and relaxed for a while then paddled across to the shore of the lake and attempted to hike to Tear Drop lake at the top of a mountain!
- We stopped because of safety issues! So close to the top too! (Safety first)
- Supper was Spaghetti and Garlic bread by Phil & Mr. Brown, and for dessert we had Fondu by myself! We dipped fruit in it. Fondu.. definitely a first for a CASS Canoe trip..but it turned out great! Chocolate pudding and peanut butter mixed together... Sliced apples and orange segments to dip with! Definitely a great dessert! Thanks to Matt for this great idea!
- Everyone (almost) went to bed early again 11 pm.
June 10
- Up early to make breakfast! (Darren, Matt, and Mr. Downing) Pancakes.
- Packed and on the water for 10:30 am.
- Retraced our tracks to complete the “loop” back through O.S.A., Killarney,
Freeland and into George lake!
- Camped on site # 5 on George lake.
- Lunch - Stoners (stoned wheat crackers and stuff) (Phil, Mr. Brown, Mr. Downing, Mr. Eliot, Ms. Rowbotham)
- Hike up to a look out point on the mountain behind our camp site.
- Awesome view That's an understatement!
- On the way back down it started to rain and thunder (4 pm.) Got just a tad wet... LOL... never say "ahh.. we don't need rainsuits" otherwise it WILL rain..
- One tent flooded so necessary tent changes were made
- Supper of drowned Kraft Dinner and salad! mmmm... soggy KD and ham! Still edible! (Phil, Mr. Brown, Lance Elliot)
- Bed at around 11 pm.
- Rained until 4 am!
June 11
- Up around 8 am
- Breakfast was gourmet oatmeal (to use up leftovers) and fruit!
- Paddled back to the George lake Access Point
- On the road to Killarney around 11 am. We took a quick drive through the town on Killarney just to see what it looked like.. interesting little place...
- From Killarney to the Hungry Bear for lunch. (About 1hour and 30 min. from George lake)
- Off to Timmy’s in Parry Sound
- From Timmy’s home to Woodstock!
- Back to school for 6 pm.
- Home by 6:45 pm.
Over all it was an excellent trip! I would do it again in a second!
