I went with my dad, and it was his first canoe tripping experience. We decided that a base-camp would be the best way to go, so that we could portage without carrying all of the gear all of the time. It worked out quite well! June 27, 2000 Drive Hwy. 35 to Little Wren Lake Access Point Note: The Wren Lake access point has moved since my last visit to the Frost Centre. As noted on the Chrismar map, the access was eliminated by road construction. The new access point is located just north of the old one, at UTM 684057 P 85 m (carryover) around dam into Raven Lake P 360 m into Gun Lake Set up camp on site UTM 707092 Note: We had plenty of time to check out all of the sites on Gun Lake, and every one of the marked sites was excellent! You can't go wrong here! Todays portage distance = 405 m Total portage distance = 405 m Todays paddle distance = 5 Km Total paddle distance = 5 Km June 28 P 60 m around Brandy Falls P 170 m into Ernest Lake We had originally decided to portage into Ronald Lake and then into Nehemiah Lakes to just take a look around. However, once we started the portage, we decided it wasn't a great idea and turned back around. The portage was not too well used, and it passed through some thick brush and over some fallen trees. Since the mosquitos decided to make an appearance, we headed back to Ernest Lake. NE into Herb Lake P 65 m around Proper Falls (lol!) P 40 m into Knife Lake Once again we tried to locate the infamous Black River, and well... my final conclusion is that it does not exist, except for those who may be willing to walk through a lot more swamp than I am! P 40 m P 65 m around Proper Falls P 170 m P 60 m around Brandy Falls W back to campsite Todays portage distance = 670 m Total portage distance = 1075 m Todays paddle distance = 10 Km Total paddle distance = 15 Km June 29 N through Gun Lake P 160 m into Black River W into Raven Lake Followed E shore of Raven Lake P 360 m into Gun Lake N back to campsite Todays portage distance = 520 m Total portage distance = 1595 m Todays paddle distance = 8 Km Total paddle distance = 23 Km June 30 S through Gun Lake P 360 m into Raven Lake SW through Raven Lake P 85 m around dam Back to access point Todays portage distance = 445 m Total portage distance = 2040 m Todays paddle distance = 5 Km Total paddle distance = 28 Km
